Activating Students in Introductory Mathematics Tutorials
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper describes a pedagogical pattern for mathematics tutorials with two different solutions depending on the underlying philosophy of learning or teaching. The aim of tutorials for introductory mathematics courses is for students to practice and apply what they have learned during the lecture. Adopting the traditional approach tutors show how to solve the given problems. Students observe the tutor solving problems on the chalkboard, copy the solution, and usually assume they are able to solve similar problems by themselves next time. Following a constructivist philosophy of learning we present a ‘parallel’ – different – solution to the same problem where learners do actively mathematics while learning how to solve mathematical problems.

Design Patterns for the Use of Technology in Introductory Mathematics Tutorials
Learning mathematics actively, oriented at mathematical processes, in a technology-enhanced learning environment differs widely from learning in traditional mathematics courses. The traditional lecture – an expert presents the knowledge the learners have to acquire – usually doesn’t activate the students’ thinking. This article introduces three didactical design patterns which describe how univ...
متن کاملChallenge of engaging all students via self-paced interactive electronic learning tutorials for introductory physics
As research-based, self-paced electronic learning tools become increasingly available, a critical issue educators encounter is implementing strategies to ensure that all students engage with them as intended. Here, we first discuss the effectiveness of electronic learning tutorials as self-paced learning tools in large enrollment brick and mortar introductory physics courses and then propose a ...
متن کاملAssessing The Effectiveness Of A Computer Simulation In Conjunction With Tutorials In Introductory Physics In Undergraduate Physics Recitations
We present two studies documenting the effectiveness of the use of a computer simulation with Tutorials in Introductory Physics in a transformed college physics course. An interactive computer simulation, entitled the Circuit Construction Kit (CCK), 3 was introduced to investigate its possible impact on students’ conceptual understanding. The first study compared students using either CCK or re...
متن کاملReplicating and Understanding Successful Innovations: Implementing Tutorials in Introductory Physics
We report a detailed study of the implementation of Tutorials in Introductory Physics at a large-scale research institution. Based on two successive semesters of evaluation, we observe studentsimproved conceptual mastery (FMCE median normalized gain = 0.77, N=336), albeit with some student discontent. We replicate the results of original studies of Tutorial e¤ectiveness and document how and wh...
متن کاملThe impact of maths support tutorials on mathematics confidence and academic performance in a cohort of HE Animal Science students
Students embarking on a bioscience degree course, such as Animal Science, often do not have sufficient experience in mathematics. However, mathematics forms an essential and integral part of any bioscience degree and is essential to enhance employability. This paper presents the findings of a project looking at the effect of mathematics tutorials on a cohort of first year animal science and man...
